Since Obama took office in January 2009, he has attempted to overhaul the health care system, improve civil rights for minorities and tackle the country’s overwhelming economic debt.
While many of his longstanding supporters have criticised him for being ’too slow'or constantly having to ’compromise'his policies in order to avoid clashing with the political right, he has at least succeeded in legislating some landmark changes that will benefit thousands of people.

From over the other side of the pond, it is easy to give opinions on things that we know very little about in reality. Having never been to the USA, my opinion of the country only comes from what I have read about and seen in the media and on films and television, but the general world view of America is not a good one, and I would tend to agree with that.

Before he became president,Barack Obama had an enormous level of support from countries like Britain, Germany and France. His political ideology was clearly influenced by the examples set by many European countries. One of the most important purposes of his campaign was to guarantee universal healthcare in the United States - a system that was been adopted in most European countries decades ago, including virtually every other western nation in the world.

The main motive for Europe’s support for Obama and the Democratic campaign in 2008 may have had little to do with his policies but more to do with the ideas of his opponents. For example, most western Europeans feel alienated by the ideology of the US Republican Party because its attitude to policies on healthcare, data quality services, crime and foreign policy are a sharp contrast to the mostly liberal outlook of Western Europe.
Many people in Britain feared that a second Republican president in the 21st century would have led to a continuation of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, obliging Britain and other NATO countries to continue their efforts by sending soldiers to conflict. Environmental organisations and green campaigners also feared that a Republican government in the US would not take the adequate steps to reduce its carbon footprint and combat the long-term problems of climate change.
Meanwhile, it is reasonable to assume that the relationship between Europe and America is stronger under Obama’s presidency than under that of George Bush. The reason for this is because Obama is not a Eurosceptic, unlike many Republicans who maintain a strong distrust for European foreign policy. He believes that a stronger Europe is essential to safeguarding America from the threat of terrorism. However, what prevents him from achieving his ultimate goals is the vocal opposition of his opponents - a challenge that will become even tougher as he fights to save his presidency in next year’s elections.

I have always admired the stability of the American nation when it comes to sharing the difficulties along with the happiness for the people in the country. However, the US political elite seems to be something far more different from the American public as a whole. I face serious difficulties in understanding the political leaders of the largest economy in the world - they seem to be thinking about the great Hotel Looe vacations more than the stability of their Read the rest of this entry »

The rest of the world is watching what goes on with America’s debt talks with utter amazement. It appears that two sides are unable to come together for the good of their nation’s economy.
The House of Representative speaker John Boehner has gone on the record saying Obama is “sorely mistaken” if he believes that he (Obama) has enough votes to raise the debt ceiling and taxes. The events are so bad that the politicians were even working through Independence Read the rest of this entry »

Surprisingly, the US economy continues to shrink despite the forecasts that it would grow in time and would recover from the severe recession. However, one branch of the state seems to have suffered no loss of capital - the military force of the US continues to be a well financed and well supplied sector.
People might have stopped buying super expensive jewellery, the automobile producers might have reduced their sales and suffered decrease in their stock values, however, the Read the rest of this entry »

Recently Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-05-13/u-s-consumer-prices-increased-0-4-in-april-on-gains-in-fuel-food-costs.html) has reported that the increases in prices in the US are advancing quite seriously against the costs of lifein the US. The magazine indicates several factors that rest upon these considerations - fuels, foods and serivces. An upcoming rise might also be the tax increase which is to pass the US Congress for approval. Coupling these components with the slow recovery from the financial recession gives the current result - the life price in the Read the rest of this entry »

Britons who visit the United States are always impressed by the sheer size of the country, which is difficult to acknowledge. You can visit just a few states and already feel like you have travelled through an entire continent, without realising that you have only barely scratched the surface.
While more Britons emigrate to the likes of Spain, Australia and France, they are still large numbers who make a decision to emigrate across the pond for a number of reasons. Read the rest of this entry »

It was the first time that a nine-week old fetus was asked to testify in a committee hearing in Ohio. The fetus was not able to say anything but rather it let everyone hear its heartbeat through ultrasound.
The sound of the fetus’ heartbeat is enough proof that this is a life worth saving, according to the pro-life group. The group supports the anti-abortion bill that is still being debated on in Ohio.

I have always enjoyed television sitcoms. From the time I was growing up and then all the way through the years, one or two television comedies have always risen to the top.
As a young child, I spent many hours in front of the television set watching such classics as I Dream of Jeanie, Gilligan’s Island, The Brady Bunch and Get Smart. The comedy back then was very simple and writers did not dare to depart from what was acceptable Read the rest of this entry »
