America from the outside

It’s Time To Kiss And Make Up!

It's Time To Kiss And Make Up!

It has often been said in the past that the United States of America and Great Britain have a special relationship, somewhere between an old married couple and two best friends who see each other every night in the local bar. We share the same language, the same love of freedom, we watch the same television shows, have the same self vanity (look at the stats for thread vein treatment, and you will see what I am talking about) and eat cardboard burgers from the same insipid food chains. Now, however, it seems that the special relationship is on its knees and we have to ask - do we head for a divorce or try mediation? I for one am sticking my head above the parapet, waving a star spangled banner and announcing that it’s time that we in Blighty stood up for our American friends as they have stood up for us!

The problems began to appear when Barack Obama was elected President. It seemed that somehow the people of Britain liked, if not respected, President George W Bush. We laughed at his faux pas on the international stage, chuckled at his greeting to our Prime Minister of ’Yo Blair!’, and we even liked his war mongering because, with Blair at his side, it was our war mongering too! Yes, Blair was never more than a poodle obeying his master’s voice but it made us feel important. Whilst the French were being referred to as ’cheese eating surrender monkeys’we were once again the plucky, brave little Brits - we were back on the world stage and we loved it!

And then Obama came along and things changed overnight. It was obvious that President Obama was his own man, a man of power, loved throughout the world - feted from Berlin to Benin. But Britain, and especially its notoriously insular press didn’t warm to him. Obama didn’t seem to care about a ’special relationship’and we felt spurned.

This matter has come to a head thanks to the BP oil spill that has devastated the Gulf of Mexico. Note that I carefully referred to ’BP’- semantics are important when struggling to keep a relationship special as any married couple will testify. The President, in a minor misjudgement referred to the company by its old name, British Petroleum, and all hell was let loose.

Obama hates the British, the papers cried, and he is using the oil spill to attack Britain itself. Look how he hounds poor old Englishman Tony Hayward, humiliating him in the Senate - why don’t they dispaly the ’English stiff upper lip'and take it on the chin? The situation reached a new nadir recently when the Daily Mail, the most poisonous of our newspapers, under a headline of ’Why President Obama Hates The British’declared that Obama was determined to punish Britain in revenge for our country having tortured his grandfather in a Kenyan prison in 1949! Even for a newspaper that once forecasted that robots would take over the earth and destroy humanity this century, this was a real low point.

The British public too seem to have turned tail sharply, where once we loved all things American we now blame them for the worlds ills and where Obama is seen as a hero to some to many more he seems a devil incarnate. This must stop now! We need to remember that the USA have been wronged in this matter, millions of decent, honest citizens are seeing their jobs and homes destroyed through no fault of their own. How far has the British sense of fair play dropped when we put our pension plans above the very lifes of countless millions of people across the Gulf of Mexico states? America saved us during World War Two yet we are quick to forget that - we were on our knees, close to defeat and if America had not entered the war, losing many of its sons in a European conflict that had little to do with them, then we would certainly have lost.

I for one say we must back President Obama, we must stop trying to avoid the blame and give the States all the help, economic and spiritual, that we can as they battle this economic disaster. President Obama is a great man, a political visionary, who hates not Britain but loves those fishermen who have been so devastated through the BP created armageddon. Please join me full square, my fellow Brits, as I say ’God Bless America!’
