Best of American comedy

I have always enjoyed television sitcoms. From the time I was growing up and then all the way through the years, one or two television comedies have always risen to the top.
As a young child, I spent many hours in front of the television set watching such classics as I Dream of Jeanie, Gilligan’s Island, The Brady Bunch and Get Smart. The comedy back then was very simple and writers did not dare to depart from what was acceptable to the networks.
In the 70s, things started to change. Situation comedies became more willing to take risks. Shows like All in the Family, Good Times and Maude all touched on sensitive social and political issues. It was funny, but also sought to teach a lesson.
Moving on to the 80s, comedy on television started to become more refined. Shows like MASH and Cosby had more interesting story lines. They continued to touch on serious issues, but also injected plenty of humor.
Probably the best time for television comedies was the 90s. We got a glimpse of 4 very quirky New Yorkers with the start of Seinfeld. Cheers was one of my all time favorites and the reruns are just as funny today as they were when they first aired 20 years ago. Another show with a great cast of characters and great writers was Taxi. My favorite character of all time was Reverend Jim.
Today, there are a few shows that make me laugh. Two and 1/2 Men is very well written. Larry David, the mind behind Seinfeld has a great show. The best comedy is the one that makes you laugh. What one person thinks is hysterical may not do anything for someone else.
