What Britons see in America - large open spaces and a lower cost of living
Posted by admin on April 14, 2011Britons who visit the United States are always impressed by the sheer size of the country, which is difficult to acknowledge. You can visit just a few states and already feel like you have travelled through an entire continent, without realising that you have only barely scratched the surface.
While more Britons emigrate to the likes of Spain, Australia and France, they are still large numbers who make a decision to emigrate across the pond for a number of reasons. The size of the average middle-class property in America is generally considerably bigger than what you would find in a typical middle-class Western European household. Environmental efficiency group would say this goes against the ’green agenda'but many couples with large families enjoy having the extra space and the large back yards when they make the move to the States. Another factor is the cost of living, which is generally lower than in most of Western Europe. The cost of rent, food, items in a jewellery shop and a souvenir shop is cheaper because productivity and turnover is so high in America, owing much to the fact that Americans work some of the longest hours in the world.
However, this must be compared against other costs such as health care or university fees, which can be considerably higher than in the UK (seeing as the UK has its own state-run free National Health Service’. Working longer hours, receiving fewer employment benefits like maternity leave, sick pay or paid holiday will also make people question whether a move across the pond is a worthy investment. It is important to weight up the positives and negatives before reaching a decision.
