Why Europeans were so vocal in their support for Obama’s presidential campaign
Posted by admin on September 27, 2011Before he became president,Barack Obama had an enormous level of support from countries like Britain, Germany and France. His political ideology was clearly influenced by the examples set by many European countries. One of the most important purposes of his campaign was to guarantee universal healthcare in the United States - a system that was been adopted in most European countries decades ago, including virtually every other western nation in the world.

The main motive for Europe’s support for Obama and the Democratic campaign in 2008 may have had little to do with his policies but more to do with the ideas of his opponents. For example, most western Europeans feel alienated by the ideology of the US Republican Party because its attitude to policies on healthcare, data quality services, crime and foreign policy are a sharp contrast to the mostly liberal outlook of Western Europe.
Many people in Britain feared that a second Republican president in the 21st century would have led to a continuation of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, obliging Britain and other NATO countries to continue their efforts by sending soldiers to conflict. Environmental organisations and green campaigners also feared that a Republican government in the US would not take the adequate steps to reduce its carbon footprint and combat the long-term problems of climate change.
Meanwhile, it is reasonable to assume that the relationship between Europe and America is stronger under Obama’s presidency than under that of George Bush. The reason for this is because Obama is not a Eurosceptic, unlike many Republicans who maintain a strong distrust for European foreign policy. He believes that a stronger Europe is essential to safeguarding America from the threat of terrorism. However, what prevents him from achieving his ultimate goals is the vocal opposition of his opponents - a challenge that will become even tougher as he fights to save his presidency in next year’s elections.
