America from the outside

American geography

From over the other side of the pond, it is easy to give opinions on things that we know very little about in reality. Having never been to the USA, my opinion of the country only comes from what I have read about and seen in the media and on films and television, but the general world view of America is not a good one, and I would tend to agree with that.

Many people say that generally, Americans are confused about world geography, and they do not have any idea what goes on outside of their own country. There is a lot of very famous footage of news teams asking members of the public on the street to point out other countries in the world, and the results were astonishing. Nearly nobody asked knew where Afghanistan was, or even where Australia was. Some of them were shown a false world map that had made up countries and a completely different set of continents drawn on it, and some of them were pointing to the map and naming places!

This is obviously just one example, but it seems to me as if this is very indicative of a lot of people there. They are obsessed with their rights, and keeping themselves safe, and they will lap up any information they are told about other countries, but in reality they have no idea about what impact they have on the rest of the world. They are more interested in working on their HR Software than learning about what is really going on in the world outside of America. It is this kind of ignorance that spawns hatred amongst nations, as people are fed wrong information about the true causes or reasons for going to war with other countries, and this is not right.
